Understanding CTs in Africa: A basic typology

understanding-cts-in-africa-a-basic-typology Cash transfer programs in Sub-Saharan Africa can be categorized along two spectrums based on countries’ income levels. Upper-middle-income countries have implemented similar CTs; and low-income countries and fragile states have operated programs that share many common characteristics. CTs in lower-middle-income countries fall into both categories. A summary of the characteristics of the two groups of CTs, which are known as the middle-income CTs and the low-income or fragile CTs, as well as an example of a well-established cash transfer system – the South African grants system, are available here.
