CT Objectives

Program duration and focus: Trends in CTs in Sub-Saharan Africa

As the popularity of CT programs rises in Sub-Saharan Africa, governments are increasingly supporting large-scale transfer programs that provide benefits for a significant period of time to beneficiaries through government systems. These programs often focus more on mitigating potential risks than addressing crises after they occur. Nevertheless, recent crises on the continent, particularly the food crisis in the Sahel region in 2011 and 2012, were an impetus for the initiation of many small CT programs, often by non-profit groups, to provide short-term relief to vulnerable populations facing food shortages.
