CT Objectives

cash-transfer-objectives-2CT programs in Sub-Saharan Africa have a wide range of goals, including accumulating human capital, encouraging peace consolidation, fighting HIV, and coping with the AIDS crisis. Other Sub-Saharan CTs have objectives related to food security, which reflects the region’s recent trend of using cash transfers to address acute and chronic food insecurity in the Sahel and beyond. Within programs lasting over one year, most CTs were focused either on poverty and food security objectives or human capital investments. Most short-term programs (i.e., those lasting one year or less) focused on addressing crises brought on by natural disasters, such as famines or floods, or human-caused disasters, usually as a result of conflicts. This section details how CTs have been used to meet short and long-term challenges within the continent.
